Walk into any grocery store and you will find an entire aisle devoted to "electrolyte" products — powders, tablets, ready-to-drink bottles — often with elaborate claims about hydration and performance. The underlying science is real: electrolytes are essential minerals that regulate fluid balance, nerve signaling, and muscle contraction. But the assumption that most people need supplemental electrolytes with daily fluids is largely a marketing story. Understanding when electrolytes genuinely matter helps you save money and use the tools that actually work when you need them.

What electrolytes are

Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge in solution. The main ones in human physiology are sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate. Each plays specific roles: sodium and chloride regulate blood volume and pressure, potassium supports nerve and muscle function, calcium and magnesium are involved in muscle contraction and enzymatic activity. These minerals are lost primarily through sweat and urine, and they are replaced through food and drink in ordinary daily eating.

Ordinary days versus extraordinary days

For a healthy adult eating a reasonably balanced diet — including some sodium-containing foods, some fruits and vegetables for potassium, and dairy, nuts, or leafy greens for calcium and magnesium — daily electrolyte needs are almost always met from food alone. Plain water is entirely adequate for hydrating during a typical workday, a moderate workout, or a walk in cool weather. The physiological case for supplemental electrolytes appears in specific situations: long-duration exercise (typically over 60 to 90 minutes), heavy sweating in heat, illness with vomiting or diarrhea, and certain medical conditions.

Endurance and heat

The most well-documented case for electrolyte replacement is prolonged exercise, especially in the heat. Athletes doing long runs, rides, or team-sport practices lasting more than about 90 minutes benefit from replacing both fluid and sodium. Drinking large volumes of plain water without any sodium during very long efforts can, in rare cases, cause hyponatremia — dangerously low blood sodium — which is a recognized risk in marathons and ultra-endurance events. Standard sports drinks or DIY solutions with a modest amount of salt, potassium, and carbohydrate are appropriate here.

Illness and rehydration solutions

The other clear case is illness. Vomiting and diarrhea deplete both fluid and electrolytes rapidly, and plain water alone is often not enough to restore balance. Oral rehydration solutions — the same formulation the World Health Organization uses for treating dehydration from diarrheal illness — combine specific amounts of sodium, potassium, and glucose in ratios that maximize absorption. Commercial products like Pedialyte or unflavored oral rehydration salts sold at pharmacies work well. Standard sports drinks are less optimal for illness but better than plain water in a pinch.

What about daily "electrolyte water"?

For a sedentary or moderately active healthy adult, adding electrolytes to daily drinking water is generally unnecessary. If you enjoy the taste, no harm is done — but the physiological benefit for most people is minimal, and many products contain added sugars, artificial sweeteners, or high sodium loads that are not necessarily desirable. People on very low-sodium or very low-carbohydrate diets, or on certain medications, may have different needs and should ask a physician or registered dietitian rather than relying on marketing claims.

When to see a professional

Signs of significant electrolyte imbalance include muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, confusion, extreme fatigue, and dizziness. These warrant medical attention. People with kidney disease, heart failure, or on diuretics or other medications that affect electrolyte balance should coordinate hydration and electrolyte choices with their healthcare team.
